Darjeeling

The town of Darjeeling is situated in Himalaya at an altitude of 2200 masl in the state of West Bengal in India. The place is famous primarily for its exclusive tea. There are tea estates all over the area. Darjeeling is a very beautiful place with a cool climate, quite different from the not to distant lowland. This is one of the reasons why Darjeeling since colonial time has been an appreciated tourist place, especially in the summer. Another feature of the area are all the tibetan monasteries. Here is also a narrow-gauge railway - a "toy train" which has to climb up the mountains 2000 m from the lowland.
Something which surprised us at our visit in 1990 was the problem to get a cup of Darjeeling tea. The inhabitants drink coffee.
