Fatehpur Sikri was intended to be capital of the Mughal Empire (What is now the Northern part of India). The great Akbar had Fatehpur Sikri built in 1571 about 40 km N of Agra in Uttar Pradesh. Probably due to defiency of water the fort was abandoned after only 15 years . Since it was never used after that, it is one of the best preserved monuments of the Mughal Era. The meaning of "Fatehpur" is supposed to be "town of victory" and "Sikri" is the name of the ridge upon which the fort is built.

Thanks to Cecilia who went to Fatehpur Sikri to supply us with pictures.

There are numerous web pages with pictures from Fatehpur Sikri and Agra. We have selected two of them: 1 & 2.
