Hanuman Hanuman is derived from Sanskrit meaning he with the strong jaws. Hanuman is a hindu monkey deity or sometimes an athletic man with monkey head and monkey tail. As the son of the wind god, Vayu, he is very strong and fast. As a very popular god, many shrines all over India are dedicated to him. Hanuman was born to be a servant of Vishnu in his incarnation as Rama and Hanuman had importance in the battle of Lanka. The Hanuman langur or Indian langur, Semnopithecus entellus (previously Presbytis entellus), is a monkey with a distribution from Pakistan and Southern Tibet, covering most of India and Sri Lanka. Hanuman looks like a langur and the monkey has got its name from the deity. In India there are a couple of other langur species eg. the black langur, Trachypithecus johnii, in a small area in the South. In the classic Keralese dance Kathakali the Hanuman figure is called "Vellathadi" which means "white beard" Thanks to Göran Frisk who photographed the Hanuman deity in Nanital for us. |
