S*Poo Nai's New Jalpaiguri |
|
New Jalpaiguri New Jalpaiguri is a railway junction situated just below the foothill (Terai) of the Himalayas near Tista River. New Jalpaiguri (between Jalpaiguri and Siliguri) replaces Siliguri as the departure place for the toy train for Darjeeling. Close to the quite poor state of Bihar and with many foreign tourists passing through, this is the only place in India we have seen a sign "Bevare of thefts". The place appeared to us however as quite peaceful. An early morning in May 1990 we went by the toy train up in the Himalaya foothill heading for Darjeeling. In the dawn we passed through tea estates. The road and the railway, side by side, are winding through small villages up and up. The sides becoming steeper and steeper and the wiew over the valleys wider and wider. But not until we had stayed in Darjeeling for several days the sky was so clear so we could se the really high peaks. |
